Non-Discrimination Policy
Part I: General
Civitas Lancaster is a non-profit community-based organization dedicated to serving the local community by raising funds to support worthwhile initiatives with a focus, but not limited to, Long's Park and Kid's Kamp (also known as Future Generations). Also support the promotion of volunteerism to younger generations through Teen Clubs. Civitas Lancaster is governed and operated by its Board of Directors. The integrity of the information and practices of the Board and volunteers are essential to its success. It is essential for the Board and volunteers servicing Civitas Lancaster to observe high standards of business and personal ethics in the conduct of their duties and responsibilities. As representatives of Civitas Lancaster, they must practice honesty and integrity in fulfilling their responsibilities and comply with all applicable laws and regulations. In order to ensure Civitas Lancaster is operated in accordance with these standards, Civitas Lancaster is adopting this Non-Discrimination Policy (the “Policy”) to maintain an organization where complaints of discrimination can be raised free of any retaliation or harassment.
It is the policy of Civitas Lancaster not to discriminate against any Board member, volunteer, grant applicant or scholarship applicant on the basis of sex, gender, gender identity, gender expression, race, color, national origin, religion, creed, age, disability, citizenship, marital or domestic partnership status, sexual orientation, genetic predisposition, military or veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by federal, state or local law, rule or regulation.
Part II: Report Responsibility
It is the responsibility of all members of the Board of Directors and volunteers of Civitas Lancaster to comply with the standard of behavior outlined above and to report violations or suspected violations of the Non-Discrimination Policy.
Part III: No Retaliation
No member of the Board of Directors, volunteers, grant or scholarship applicants (the “Individual”) who in good faith reports a violation of the Non-Discrimination Policy, shall suffer harassment, retaliation, or adverse consequence. Anyone who retaliates against someone who has reported a violation in good faith is subject to discipline and removal from Civitas Lancaster Board, his or her position with Civitas Lancaster or from the activities of Civitas Lancaster itself. The Policy is intended to encourage and enable individuals to raise serious concerns within Civitas Lancaster prior to seeking resolution outside Civitas Lancaster.
Part IV: Reporting Violations
If any individual has a reasonable belief that a Board Member or any volunteers of Civitas Lancaster has engaged in any action or conduct that violates the Non-Discrimination Policy, the Individual is expected to immediately report such information to the Board President of Civitas Lancaster. If the Individual does not feel comfortable reporting the information to the Board President of Civitas, he or she should report to the Board Vice-President.
All reports will be followed up promptly, and an investigation conducted. In conducting the investigation, Civitas Lancaster will strive to keep the identity of the Individual as confidential as possible, while conducting an adequate review and investigation.
Civitas Lancaster will not retaliate against the Individual in the terms and conditions of his or her position on the Board or other relationship with Civitas Lancaster because that Individual: a) reports in good faith what he or she believes to be a violation of the Non-Discrimination Policy; b) participates in good faith in any resulting investigation or proceeding; or c) exercises his or her rights under any state or federal laws or regulations to pursue a claim or take legal action to protect the Individual’s rights.
The Board President is responsible for investigating and resolving all reported complaints and allegations and, at his or her discretion, shall advise the Board of Directors. If a report is made directly to the Board Vice-President, he or she shall provide the information to the Board President who shall be responsible for investigating and resolving all reported complaints and allegations. If an allegation is made against the Board President, the Board Vice President shall be responsible for investigating and resolving the claim and apprising the Board of Directors of the claim.
Part V: Acting in Good Faith
Anyone filing a complaint concerning a violation or suspected violation of the Non-Discrimination Policy must be acting in good faith and have reasonable grounds for believing the information disclosed constitutes a violation of the policy. Any allegations that prove not to be substantiated, or false, and which prove to have been made maliciously, or with knowledge that the allegations were not substantiated, or false, will be viewed as a serious disciplinary offense and may result in the Individual’s removal from the Board of Directors or other position with Civitas Lancaster.
Part VI: Confidentiality
Violations or suspected violations may be submitted on a confidential basis by the complainant or may be submitted anonymously. Reports of violations or suspected violations will be kept confidential to the extent possible, consistent with the need to conduct an adequate investigation.
Part VII: Handling of Reported Violations
The Board President will notify the Individual and acknowledge receipt of the reported violation or suspected violation within five business days. All reports will be promptly investigated, and appropriate corrective action will be taken if warranted by the investigation.
